Why Cultural Competence is Important

Embracing diversity enhances one’s ability to adapt to diverse backgrounds and settings. My culture, faith, family, passions, and values make up my life. This semester, I intend to share about my culture intentionally and then actively listen to others' cultures. I want to understand the similarities and differences that lead to an appreciation of cultural diversity. In my career, I want to understand and emphasize others in discourse (TEDx Talks, 2017). Doing so provides an opportunity to learn about their culture and for them to learn about my culture while maintaining professional standards.
