Integrating Climate Solutions into My Life and Community
Reading Is Any One Listening? It has left me feeling more knowledgeable about the role of individual and community action in making a tangible impact on climate and the outcomes of population health, as presented by Davenport (2024), and reading the studies surrounding it. The most notable thing I learned during the presentation at Rutgers was that the Earth is a patient with - disease but curable. That framing got me to put together that just as in medicine, climate change needs a systemic approach, as well as individual treatment. I was thinking about how electric transportation, green power generation, geothermal projects, and cool roofs are not only general international policies but workable, optimistic ones that can be involved in daily life.
Cool roofing was one of my preferred choices. The Rutgers presentation suggested reflective roofing as a low-cost, low-technology method of combating urban heat islands, particularly in cities with deadly heat in summer. The article by Bunker-Compoare et al. (2024) surprised me by revealing that cool roofs in rural Africa lowered the indoor temperature, pulse rates, and well-being. Home passive cooling increases physical health, emotional comfort, and economic productivity. This finding led me to consider how reflective paints and rooftop vegetation can transform my busy urban street with pavements and grey roofs into a cooler and healthier place.
