In Macionis work he discussed the increasing importance of education especially these days. In Chapter 13, he stated that the trend of educational attainment is constantly increasing since more college students are graduating these years. However, he also discussed pertinent issues such as the difference in between educational attainment between low-income and high-income countries, as well as within them. Specifically for the United States, his work discussed how even our greatest efforts and achievements has prevented the increase in illiteracy in the country. In relation to the video presented by Brooks, he discussed how our genes as well as our circumstances (nature vs. nurture) could affect our mood and emotions in life. When viewed in this perspective, it could be argued that in order to solve this problem of illiteracy, we must also change the “changeable” circumstances, which is our circumstances. In order to do this, institutions and support groups must be the one to provide the necessary adjustments to help people engage in learning activities that would allow for the expression of their own personalities and strengths.
