Planning for the Mediated Speech with Analysis

Speech Topic:

Why You Should Attend Rutger University for Your Next Degree

Rhetorical Purpose:

To debate that Rutger University is the prime spot for my audience’s quest for new degrees.

Audience Analysis:
(Refer to chapters on Audience Analysis & Persuasive Speaking)

Summarize Audience demographics, prior exposure/knowledge, common ground/interest, disposition/attitude, and situational characteristics. Incorporate results of Audience Analysis Survey about classmates from the Audience Analysis Activity/Discussion in Unit 3. Also, incorporate techniques on “Tailoring your Persuasive Message to Your Audience” from the readings on Persuasive Speaking.

From the audience analysis survey, some of my classmates want to enroll in graduate studies after their undergraduate program comes to an end. Others have expressed an interest in enrolling for other undergraduate programs to help enhance their academic resume. A speech on why they need to choose Rutgers University matters to these individuals because, at some point, each will have to make a choice.

Persuasive claims:
(refer to chapter on Persuasive Speaking)

Organizing fact claims, value claims, or policy claims?  Please explain.

My speech will be dominated by fact claims. However, I also plan to incorporate value claims in trying to persuade my audience.

Organizational Pattern:
(refer to chapters on Organizing Your Speech & Informative/ Persuasive Speaking)

Causal, comparison, categorical, criteria-application, motivated sequence, problem-cause-solution pattern, or comparative advantage? You also want to think about the pro and con sides.  Please explain.

Here, I plan to use categorical organizational pattern.

Message/
Methods of Persuasion/Informative Techniques:

(refer to chapter on Methods of Persuasion)

How do you plan to use evidence and reasoning (logos), and avoid logical fallacies? Do you plan to use emotional appeals? (pathos) or credibility (ethos)? What informative techniques will be used to provide background information on this topic

I plan to use logos and this will be evident through the evidence that I will provide. There will also be instances of ethos. The first instance of ethos is me as a Rutgers student and the use of credible sources.

Types of Supporting Materials:
(refer to chapter on Supporting Materials)

What types of supporting materials do you plan to include? (e.g., examples, definitions, testimony, statistics, narratives, analogies)

I plan to mostly examples and statistics. I may also make use of testimonies.

Types of Research Sources:
(review “Background Information” for the Speech Research Activity)

What types of research sources (e.g., primary, secondary, and/or tertiary) do you plan to use to support the thesis statement and main points?  Please explain. Note: 5 credible and relevant sources are required including at least 1 source from a Rutgers University Libraries periodical database.

I plan to use primary sources. By primary sources I mean information I myself as a Rutgers student has and the school’s website. I will also make use of secondary sources and these will include articles mentioning the school and supporting my thesis statement and arguments.

Congratulations on your admission to Rutgers University-New Brunswick. You have been selected from among thousands of highly qualified applicants to attend…Who, like me, jumped up and down, screamed at the top of their lungs while reading these words? Getting accepted to a university ranked 41st in the latest Worl University Rankings is not a mean feat. To me, it felt and still feels like a major achievement.

II.

Thesis Statement:

Where else would you prefer to do your next degree other than a university that enhances your research skills, grows you culturally, and offers you quality education?

III.

Connection with Audience:

What defines you as a Rutgers student? What do you believe sets us apart from the rest? Well, we get what others aspire for. You leave Rutgers a different person and considering that it is a university of repute, your future is somewhat guaranteed.

IV.

Being a Rutgers student, I believe I am in the best position to offer such a speech. I have seen and been a part of great Rutgers University moments, and believe the future is even brighter.

V.
