Globally, the social inequality that arises from mass incarceration is substantial, amassed, and intergenerational. While some people would welcome the mass detention of minority groups to protect society and ensure adherence to the law, others argue the same act causes adverse effects on the already deprived groups (Cox, 2018). In reality, the time spent in prison has a profound social and economic impact on minority communities.
Mass incarceration causes adverse social and health effects on communities. Several collateral consequences accrue to imprisoned persons even after completing their sentences (Cox, 2018). Mass incarceration leads to a complete change in individual lives, families as well as their dependents. For instance, when a child loses a parent to imprisonment, the youngster is at higher risk of poverty and mental health problems. With this in mind, society is more likely to assume the burden.
Since most of the incarcerated offenders return to the same communities or similar locations to where they had been removed, their large numbers add a substantial disadvantage. Besides, high imprisonment rates cause severe impacts on populations, including losing working adults, increased exposure to infectious diseases, and shifting developmental resources to the penal system (Wildeman & Wang, 2017). For instance, incarcerated are at higher risk of contracting chronic health conditions while in prison and after they are released.
Despite the massive growth, the United States still face racial and economic discrimination. Therefore, it is not a surprise that minorities have been incarcerated unreasonably. Persons living in minority communities are well aware that law enforcers are highly unlikely to offer protection forever. They live with real fears of retaliation from released convicts if they cooperate (Travis et al., 2014).
