This quote stood out to me because I agree with her that if we don't understand the root causes of racism, we will never be able to move beyond it. Racism goes deeper than the violent acts that get seen on the news and protested against. It can be walking down the sidewalk and crossing the street to avoid walking past an African American because you are afraid due to stereotypes against them. Dr. Francis stated "the presumption of dangerousness is tightly bound to race for so many in this country" which can lead to people seeing the color of a person's skin and feeling fear. This is seen in Dr. Francis's story about her brother Kenny sitting on his stoop and having police officers come up to him and push him against the wall while asking him what drugs he had (Francis, 2016). She also talked about how she was stopped by the TSA in the airport for having a "weapon" in the airport that was simply a plastic ring the agent tried to classify as brass knuckles (Francis, 2016). The officers in these stories saw the color of Dr. Francis and her brother's skin and never saw them as a person until looking at their ID and realizing they were harmless people. I believe this is one of the root causes that need to be changed in this country. References: Francis, M. (2016). Megan Ming Francis' TEDx talk highlights the necessity of addressing core issues rather than providing surface fixes. She states, “Fixes that do not address the root causes of an issue are not really fixes at all” (Francis, 2016). Her take highlights the necessity for human service professionals to dig deeper into the structural roots of racial injustices. A significant portion of the population experiences daily discrimination, leading to chronic stress and mental health issues, as reported by the APA (2016). This underlines the importance of an approach that that takes into consideration social and systemic injustices. Furthermore, understanding the biological transmission of trauma, as described by Rachel Yehuda, can inform more effective treatment strategies that consider the long-term impacts on future generations (NewsHour, 2015). In sum, addressing intergenerational trauma requires a fresh approach, and a strategy that combines awareness with cultural humility.
