The questions below are designed to elicit individual, that is, your responses to what you have read and internalized from the reading. You are also encouraged to add whatever thoughts you have on the chapter you have just read. This is a journal, after all! As with the discussion boards, your responses to the questions should be in paragraph form and include “I” statements. The more you show me, your instructor, that you see Ritzer’s principles of McDonaldization around you and in your own life, the better your score will be. Remember, the journals and discussion boards are worth more than other assignments.
Resources for the Assessment:
Textbook reading: Ritzer– Chapter 6: Irrationality: The Basic Dimensions
Optional reading: Ritzer - Epilogue: McDonaldization in the Age of Covid-19
Within the minimum requirements of one paragraph answers for each question, discuss the following:
What is the irrationality of rationality? Give two examples of it from your own experience.
Ritzer says that the efficiency of McDonaldization does not ordinarily save consumers money. Explain, discussing several of the examples from your text. See if you can develop two original examples that support his claims. See if you can also come up with two original examples that show how McDonaldization does save the consumer money.
What did Max Weber mean by disenchantment (p. 141)? Do you agree with his prediction that the Western world has grown increasingly disenchanted? Why or why not? What, if anything, is still enchanted?
What is dehumanization? How is it a consequence of the McDonaldization process? What are some ways that it could be overcome, or at least alleviated?
Finally, what have you learned from the Ritzer text? Explain!
Optional: Include your thoughts on the Epilogue.
Conventions: As this is a journal, you are not required to write in APA style, but conventions (MUGS errors), such as mechanics, usage, grammar, and spelling, will be part of your overall grade. Submit your journal as a Word document.
The journal assignments are designed to prompt personal reflections on the questions. The aim is for you to apply what you're learning from the Ritzer text to your own life, not to provide objective or academic responses that result from research using an outside source such as AI. Using AI to answer the journal questions would be a violation of the University’s Academic Integrity PolicyLinks to an external site.. Your unique thoughts and insights are what your instructor for this class values.

Journal Title: Reflecting on Ritzer’s Principles of McDonaldization
Date: (24th April 2024)
Introduction:
In this Journal, I will reflect on Ritzer’s text on how the McDonaldization processes and principles of efficiency, predictability, and control have influenced many aspects of our contemporary society. I will reflect on personal experiences to establish the extent of the irrationality of rationality, the impact of McDonaldization on consumer spending, dehumanization, and disenchantment concepts and conclude with a summary of lessons derived from the text.
The irrationality of rationality:
The irrationality of rationality, as explained by Ritzer, provides that striving to achieve efficiency within the McDonaldization process often has outcomes that are less efficient and irrational. I have been able to experience this irrationality firsthand, for instance, I worked for an organization that aimed to reduce the cost of production through automating customer services. Unfortunately, the organization did not meet maximum customer satisfaction due to the lack of personalization and technical inefficiencies that the automatic system could not resolve. In another instance, I visited a healthcare institution that had implemented a reduced patient consultation time to save costs. I lacked enough time to discuss my symptoms and health concerns with the healthcare provider thus...
