Planning for the Informative Speech with AnalysisSpeech Topic:Dog TrainingRhetorical Purpose:To inform my audience about how to train and eventually have a well-behaved dog.
Audience Analysis:
(Refer to chapter on Audience Analysis)Summarize Audience demographics, prior exposure/knowledge, common ground/interest, disposition/attitude, and situational characteristics. Incorporate results of Audience Analysis Survey about classmates from the Audience Analysis Activity/Discussion in Unit 3.
From the Audience Analysis Survey, a majority of my classmates would love to have a dog as a pet. Many of them believe dogs are cute and having a well-behaved dog adds to the cuteness. So, I believe this speech will attract their attention. Use of examples of well-behaved dogs as well as my experience of interacting with well-behaved dogs should add to the speech.
A significant number of classmates also have dogs as pets (as indicated in the Audience Analysis survey) and this speech will thus be personal to many of them. However, it is still crucial that the speech is entertaining and enhanced with rhetorical devices to help appeal to my audience further.

Refer to chapter on Outlining Your Speech.I.Attention Getter:When Osmar Persisco took his dog, Max, out for a normal exercise one day in Brazil, he did not know that he would nearly lose him. While in the field, Osmar and Max were approached by two men who demanded Osmar’s car keys. When he declined, one of the men shot Osmar, and Max immediately jumped into action. He attacked the two men but suffered three gun shots. Osmar took his best friend to hospital and luckily, Max’s life was saved.
II. Thesis Statement:Everything in life takes time and while training one’s dog might seem like a difficult task, in the end, a majority of dog owners end up happy and satisfied with the time and effort they invest.
III.Connection with Audience:There is no denying that dogs are man’s best friend, and therefore, it is crucial to understand how to make this relationship even better and fun.
IV.Speaker’s Credibility:I like dogs and have been involved in a dog training exercise before. I believe my dog, Ross, is well-trained and thus far, I have experienced and seen first-hand the benefit of training a dog.
V.Preview of Main Points:First, I will discuss the importance of knowing the breed of a dog before starting the training exercise. Secondly, I will discuss the different types of training, and lastly, I will discuss specifics of training a dog at home.
