Communicating Gender Messages
Instructions
When it comes to communicating gender messages, the media is a huge influence.
For this exercise, you will analyze the gender messages in the magazine covers from Glamour and GQ presented below. Review the role of various socializing agents presented in the Learning Activity for Agents of Socialization. Then, study the two covers and make note of specific differences you see.
Consider things such as how the cover is put together, the colors used, style of the lettering and the headlines for the stories inside the issue.
Example: Jennifer Aniston’s pose is seductive and a bit sexy, while Jay-Z looks strong and very masculine. (Sorry, but you can’t use this one!)
Identify at least four (4) such features in these covers and provide a specific description of the different gender message being communicated through each. Each of your observations must consist of at least four (4) distinct sentences. Number your observations 1–4.
