According to Silver (2020), real evidence authentication aims to investigate whether the real evidence is what it claims to be. This process is tailored to satisfy the fundamental approaches of proving the real evidence identity by (a) demonstrating that the evidence is “readily identifiable” and (b) demonstrating the “chain of custody.” That said, the evidence is real if it is tangible and historically linked to the filed offense. The witness must directly identify an item presented as evidence with personal information who recognizes the item.
