Discussion: Anti-oppressive Research As a profession, social work is primarily concerned with addressing the challenges individuals and communities face. Engaging in anti-oppressive research as a social worker is integral in challenging systems of oppression that subjugate certain groups in society. We live in a society characterized by many systems of oppression, including racism, ableism, and heterosexism, which maintain and perpetuate imbalances in wealth, power, and opportunity (Harvard Global Health Institute, n.d.).
