Units 7 and 8 have been devoted to understanding social-emotional development. Recognizing the significance of fostering healthy self-development in children is crucial for adults in their lives because they play a pivotal role in shaping their children’s development. For this assignment, imagine that you are a child development expert who has been asked to provide information for parents that will be made available at a child drop-in center that caters to all early periods of development – infancy/toddlerhood, early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence. Please use the Unit 8 Assignment Template to create a FAQ document that traces self-development, focusing on self-awareness and self-control in infancy/toddlerhood and self-concept and self-esteem in early childhood, middle childhood and adolescence. Healthy Self-development
Healthy self-development is an essential aspect that all children should experience to enjoy a background concerned about their development. The development includes their emotion, day-to-day interactions, and general mental health. On top of that, these developments impact the children, such as how they perceive themselves, face challenges, and associate with their fellows. For this reason, when children have proper self-esteem and concepts, they can gain confidence, be strong, and associate with their fellows easily.
Key Terms
Self-awareness is the state of recognizing and perceiving yourself as an independent person separate from your fellows and the environment you are and they are in. Self-control is an individual's ability to manage emotions and behaviors in all circumstances. Self-concept is the collection of all the characteristics, skills, and standards that one believes describe them (Berk, 2022). On the other hand, self-esteem is assessing a person's worthiness to determine their self-respect.
Infancy/Toddlerhood
In relation to infancy and toddlerhood, self-awareness among children starts to be expressed within the first months of their birth. For example, Caitlin, who is an infant, started smiling and was seen interacting with her image as she looked in the mirror. For this reason, infants start recognizing themselves while they are very young (Berk, 2022). At the age of two years, children adjust to their self-awareness by recognizing themselves in various photos (Berk, 2022). In addition, they start talking, referring to themselves as “I.” In terms of self-control, toddlers are witnessed following instructions. For example, they can share toys freely when asked to or not. In addition, they can handle their impulses well, as observed through their ability to express fairness in everything they do.
