Seeking Opportunities: The authors found that the first stage of displacement for Latino immigrants is focused on seeking new opportunities and a better life in the United States (Serrata & Fischer, 2013). As a counselor, I would use this theme to emphasize the client’s resilience and determination to create a better future for themselves and their family. I can help build trust and rapport with the client by highlighting this strength, creating a solid foundation for the therapeutic alliance.
Emotional Reactions: The second stage is characterized by emotional reactions such as anxiety, sadness, and fear (Serrata & Fischer, 2013). As a counselor, I would use this theme to validate the client’s feelings and acknowledge the difficulties they may have faced during their immigration journey. By providing a safe and empathetic environment, I can help the client process their emotions and begin to work through any related trauma or stress.
