Applied Behavior Analysis Vs. Other Approaches in Psychology
The key factor that differentiates applied behavior analysis from other approaches in psychology is its grounding in natural science and evidence-based practice. For this discussion, please review the assigned readings in this unit.
Please respond to the following:
How does the approach of science differ from other approaches to gathering information about the world?
Describe the goals of science (description, prediction, and control) that are the foundation for a scientific approach in ABA.
Describe the philosophical assumptions or "attitudes" of science and explain why these are important as a foundation for applied behavior analysis.
Recall your reading of the article "Practical Components for Getting the Most From a Token Economy" (Ackerman et al., 2020), and discuss whether and how the research supports the goals of science, the philosophical assumptions of science, and the seven dimensions of applied behavior analysis. Be sure to provide specific examples from the article to support your discussion.

How does the approach of science differ from other approaches to gathering information about the world?
Science differs from other approaches to collecting information concerning the world because it predominantly relies on empirical evidence. A scientist creates research questions and uses experimental methods to come up with answers. Empirical research depends on systematic observation as well as experimentation, as opposed to religion and philosophy, which relies on opinions, feelings, and spiritual insights (Cooper et al., 2020).
Describe the goals of science (description, prediction, and control) that are the foundation for a scientific approach in ABA.
The goals of science forming the foundation of scientific methodology in applied behavior analysis (ABA) include description, prediction, and control. Description entails pointing out and delineating behavior concisely and clearly, thus contributing to credible measurement and evaluation that aids the development of specific behavioral interventions. Prediction allows behaviorists to develop interventions congruent to individual needs and track behavioral changes over time. Control entails using environmental factors to institute the required behavioral changes (Cooper et al., 2020).
