Solve problem 56 on page 437 of Elementary and Intermediate Algebra. Set up the two ratios and write your equation choosing an appropriate variable for the bear population.
56.Bear population. To estimate the size of the bear population on the Keweenaw Peninsula, conservationists captured, tagged, and released 50 bears. One year later, a random sample of 100 bears included only 2 tagged bears. What is the conservationist's estimate of the size of the bear population?
Complete problem 10 on page 444 of Elementary and Intermediate Algebra. Show all steps in solving the problem and explain what you are doing as you go along.
10.y-1/x+3= -1/3
Write a two to three page paper that is formatted in APA style and according to the Math Writing Guide. Format your math work as shown in the example and be concise in your reasoning. In the body of your essay, please make sure to include:
Your solution to the above problems, making sure to include all mathematical work, and an explanation for each step
A discussion of the following: What form of an equation do you end up with in problem 10? What do you notice about the coefficient of x compared to the original problem? Do you think there might be another way to solve this equation for y than with the proportion method? How would you do it?
An incorporation of the following four math vocabulary words into your paper. Use bold font to emphasize the words in your writing. (Do not write definitions for the words; use them appropriately in sentences describing your math work.):
Extraneous
Proportion
Cross multiply
Extreme-means
The paper must be at least two pages in length and formatted according to APA style. Cite your resources in text and on the reference page. For information regarding APA samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center, within the Learning Resources tab on the left navigation toolbar.

Question 56
Number of bears captured, tagged and released = 50
Sample of bears captured after one year = 100
Number of tagged bears in the second capture = 2
What is the approximated population of the bears?
From the formula,
N= MC,
R
Where,
NÂ = Approximated population
MÂ = Number of animals captured, tagged and released the first time
CÂ = Number of animals capture the second time
RÂ = the number of animals recaptured after their first capture and release.
A proportion written in terms of the variable as,
N/ M = C/ R,
N /50 =100 / 2,
In order to find the value of N, cross multiply the extremes that include N and 2 and equate the product to that of the cross multiply of the mean which is 50 and 100.
N * 2 = 50 * 100 ,
2N = 5000,
Dividing both sides by 2 to get the value of N,
2N/2 = 5000 / 2,
N= 2500
The conservationist`s approximation of the bear population is 2500 bears.
Question10
y-1 / x+3 = -1 / 3 This equation is a proportion
Taking the product of cross multiply of the extreme and equating to the product of the cross-multiply of the mean gives,
(y - 1) 3 = - 1 ( x + 3) ,
Expanding the above equation gives,
3 y - 3 = - x - 3,
Add + 3 to both the left hand side and the right hand side of the equation,
3 y - 3 + 3 = - x - 3 + 3,
3y = - x,
The above equation is written as,
...
