Coursework Instructions:
Lottery games are a platform where you invest a small amount of money (usually a dollar or two) in hope of winning big against long odds. Lotteries have been played in the United States (US) from colonial times and a state lottery was made lawful in for the first time in New Hampshire in 1964. Only six states and territory in the US do not have a lottery system. Research and present a post on a lottery that takes place in your state. If your state does not have a lottery, pick a state close to your state that does have a lottery. Explain the details of the lottery game you are presenting- what type, scratching or drawing, how many numbers? Can you calculate the probability of winning the jackpot and various consolation prizes in that game? Explain the math and outcomes. If people understood the mathematics involving probability and lottery, do you think they would continue to play?

Lotteries Student Instructor Institution Course and Code Date New York Lotto Lotteries have been a part of American culture for centuries. They have been sold since colonial times to win a lot with a very small amount of money (Safane, 2024). New Hampshire became the first state in the modern age to start a legal lottery in 1964, and the industry has expanded since. Only six states and territories do not have an official lottery system in the United States today. To most players, a lottery ticket is the cheap way to fantasize about becoming suddenly rich. For states, lotteries provide significant revenue that funds state education, infrastructure, and any other social initiative. This paper will discuss the New York State Lotto, describe how the game operates, go through the mathematics of winning, and whether or not people would reconsider the choice once they recognize the numbers behind the game. New York has a variety of lotteries to choose from, including instant scratch tickets and multi-state lotteries like Mega Millions or Powerball. However, New York Lotto is the traditional in-house draw game of the state (Hiltner, 2025). It is not an instant lottery game or scratch-off but a drawing-style lottery. The procedures are simple; the player chooses six numbers within the range of 1-59. Two drawings are conducted every week on Wednesday and Saturday. To claim the jackpot, a player has to match all 6 numbers drawn. If no one gets a complete match to the six, then the jackpot is rolled over and continues increasing until it is claimed. Jackpot has a base price of $2 million, but it can be even more at the time of rollover. Along with the top prize, the lottery provides a number of smaller prizes. When players match three, four, or five numbers, they win. It also has a bonus ball to add on another prize level of a match of five numbers and the bonus number. Such an arrangement would present a tempting picture on the surface: lots of ways to win, and potentially life-changing money. However, is this possible? To understand this, let us calculate the probability of winning. Calculating Probability The selection of the players constitutes 6 numbers between 1 and 59. In the draw, 6 main numbers are normally drawn, and only one bonus number is chosen among the remaining numbers. Prizes are as follows: 6/6, 5/6 plus bonus, 5/6, 4/6, 3/6; however, there is no prize for 2/6. To calculate the number of possible tickets...
