1.      Purpose of an Organization's Mission, Vision, and Values
Mission
  • An organization’s mission is a precise explanation of an organization’s reason for existence, its objectives, and how it plans to achieve these objectives and serve its stakeholders (Qin et al., 2023).  The purpose of a mission is to:

 i.            Communicate the reason behind the company’s formation or existence.
ii.            Create a target for strategic planning and development.
 iii.            Design measurable objectives and goals for assessing the effectiveness of the organization’s strategy (Rego, Araújo, & Serrão, 2016).
 iv.            Define how the organization differs from competitors.
v.            Guide the organization's actions.
vi.            Provide directions for the future.
vii.            Define the organization's strengths and weaknesses.
Vision
  • Vision is a future-oriented declaration of the overarching purpose and aspirations of an organization. It describes what the organization will become in the future (Rego et al., 2016). The purpose of the organization's mission and vision is to:
 i.            Describe the organization’s dream and its targeted accomplishments.
 ii.            Design measurable objectives and goals for assessing the effectiveness of the organization’s strategy (Rego, Araújo, & Serrão, 2016).
iii.            State organization’s future aspirations.
 iv.            Engender support from stakeholders.
v.            Inform strategy development.
vi.            Communicate the organization's value and commitment to achieving its goals
Values
  • Values are core principles and beliefs that guide and direct the organization and its culture.
  • They define what an organization believes in and how employees are expected to behave when interacting with customers, colleagues, and other stakeholders (Qin  et al., 2023). The purpose of values is to:
 i.            Create a moral compass for the organization and its employees
 ii.            Act as a guiding principle that provides an organization with purpose and direction
iii.            Communicate what is important to the organization
iv.            Provide clarity and direction for decision-making. Through clearly defined values, the organization can ensure employee decision complies with its goals and mission (Rego et al., 2016). 
v.            Improve employee engagement. Values give employees something to believe in, making them feel more connected to the organization (Qin et al., 2023).
vi.            Attract like-minded talents and customers.
  vii.            Separate the organization from the competitors. Values show the public the organization’s unique attributes, giving the organization a competitive advantage.
2.      Why an Organization's Mission, Vision, and Values are Significant to Nurse Engagement and Patient Outcomes
  • Well-developed organizational mission, vision, and values increase nurse engagement and promote positive patient outcomes.
    • Nurses whose objectives and values align with those of the organization, become committed to their work and feel more satisfied and engaged (Qin, et al., 2023). Increased nurse satisfaction promotes quality care, improving patient outcomes.
