Rhythm of Life Technology
Rhythm of Life Technology is a company that has ventured in to the health sector having made its technological achievement by designing a gadget called a Health Watch. The Health Watch is like a normal watch only that it monitor’s the customer’s health by tracking and recording certain health measurements and notify the owner when their health conditions are not optimum or normal. In the company, I am the Chief Information Officer in charge of computer system strategies that are obliged to support the company in its aim of achieving its goals (Schuler & Marshchall, 2014). My specific responsibilities in the company are technical projects such as formulating the vision and mission of the organization, delegating day-to-day information technology operations as well as supervising the company’s team of on their responsibilities in the field of information technology. Moreover, I work with the team of the management department to ensure that the company is managed utterly well.
Theory of the Role (research)
My position, like any other function in a company, has its own organizational challenges and issues related with operation. Furthermore, considering the fact that Rhythm Life Technology is a new but rapidly growing company, the CIO is ought to be the best employee to ensure that the company is ultimately successful. Therefore, having done endless research on the function and how it can be made efficient and successful, there are several hard skills that a CIO requires. Firstly, a CIO should be proficient in Information Technology services that the company is supposed to offer and create security policies to ensure that the company’s information can only be obtained by the company (Schuler & Marshchall, 2014). Secondly, a CIO should have a great taste in recruiting new individuals, supervising and directing IT personnel. Thirdly, he or she should have good qualities of engaging employees in the performance of their jobs as well as have plausible management, project management and finance management skills. Lastly, a CIO should have the right social skills required for establishing partnerships with other personalities and companies. In addition, Schuler & Marshchall (2014) state that other than hard skills, a CIO is supposed to have certain soft skills of performance such as having the ability to build positive relations with other members of the team, having gratitude, integrity, empathy, the spirit of teamwork and a sense of humor to keep Rhythm Life Technology lively.
Division/Function structure
Rhythm of Life Technology has both functional and divisional structures. However, since I am in the Information Technology department, I will explain the primary responsibilities of the division, the types of jobs that the division offers and the number of employees in the department as well as their specific functions. Therefore, the first responsibility of the IT division in our company is governance (Gelfond et al., 2017). This implies that it is the responsibility of the division to create parameters of operation and use of architecture, information systems and networks in the company. In other words, the division sets background rules on the type of information that can be accessed by the company’s employees, how they can access it and how they can use it. Secondly, the Information Technology division sets the infrastructure of the company. This means that it runs the company’s hardware components such as computers, IT system, network and circulation (Gelfond et al., 2017). The next responsibility is that of functionality where the division achieves the specific tasks of the company. These tasks include creating and storing the company’s operational data, securing the hardware operational data and the overall company’s data as well as explaining reviews on how the watch functions.
In my department, every member has the right to make a decision. When one makes a suggestion, the whole team holds a meeting, discusses the issue and evaluates it to see if it qualifies to be an organizational decision (Stephens et al., 1992). Therefore, there are certain decisions that my team made and still makes to ensure that the department runs smoothly in to achieving the overall goal of Rhythm of Life Technology. These decisions include, firstly, creating a strategic plan that will be followed by all members of the team in order to realize the vision of the department. The second decision that has been made is on the values that each member of the team should have in adherence to the culture of the department (Stephens et al., 1997). Thirdly, whenever the department has to make a recruitment, a decision on the talents and abilities to be looked for, is always made by all the team members. Fourthly, in case of a particular perception or deception that a customer has about the company, it is the role of the department to make a decision on what to tell the customer in order to boost employee-customer relations (Stephens et al., 1997). Additionally, aligning or decoding the chronology of activities of the department, which should be followed by all members, is another important decision. Sixthly, whenever there is a security bridge in the department and the whole company in general, the department makes the decision of the effective and appropriate approach to the problem. Finally, the decision on the cost and budget of the project is made by the department upon consultation of the executive division of the company.
Employees in the department of Information Technology are tasked with several responsibilities that lead to the realization and achievement of the project. In this case, I will explain the different roles of individual employees in the department while relating their jobs to the tasks they completed in the development of the Health Watch (Dupont, 2001). The RACI model in the appendix part elucidates the exact responsibilities of the employees and the degree of urgency of the tasks. For instance, all employees were responsible for providing the ultimate concept of the project in terms of its meaning and abstract function to the rest of the departments. Other responsibilities include the features of the product being developed, such as the contents of its dashboard, the sole task of creating a Facebook API generator for the product, setting up the most suitable environment to test the product, the responsibility of the actual testing of the product and the task of deciding what the company should do now that the product is active and functional (Dupont, 2001). Finally, employees had the task of drawing a map for its delivery and ensuring that it is efficient and reliable. The RACI model gives an evaluation of the specific tasks of every member of the team.
The RACI diagram is illustrated in the appendix section
Processes.
The department performs one of the most important processes in the company. This is the process of management of data, managing the company’s infrastructure and providing the company with the required information and operating the overall systems of the business of the company. Therefore, the whole process of the department of information technology starts with offering credible information on the mandatory need of hardware systems in the company (Stephens et al., 1997). Any company needs a system because one has to keep the data of their company private and meaningful. I identified the need by normally operating the company but without the information systems. The result was that the company was evidently lacking a huge part in its day-to-day business since provision of information, data security and storage is vital.
