Leadership Development Plan
I worked as an intern in a Charity organization helping victims of war and internally displaced people. The organization assigned some duties and goals for every employee. For example, I was given responsibilities such as recording the name of new victims in the camps, interviewing victims to find their problems, and executing weekly guidance and counseling activities to help refugees cope with their problems as the organization try to solve their problems. We experienced several internal and external stressors in executing our roles. For example, the camp faced many attacks from the rebel trying to grab children to replenish their army. There was also poor transport and bad weather, making it difficult to operate.
Emotional Intelligence and Character Strengths
The knowledge of emotional intelligence enabled me to execute my roles and relate and comminute well with my colleagues and the organization in general. I used my competence to arrive at work, which enabled me to complete all tasks assigned during the day. I understood that time is precious to help me finish work early and start planning for tomorrow's work. I realized that personal confidence entails wearing formal attire to appear professional and glamorous during work (Brackett & Elbertson, 2019). The idea enabled me to attract my colleagues' attention and respect. The top management always appointed me to lead many formal meetings with the refugees to understand their problems and report the information to the organization. I always surrounded myself with positive people to help me finish my work comprehensively. I used to come across some colleagues complaining about work and personal issues. It compelled me to listen to their problems and find ways to solve them. For instance, I inform the management about the complaints and grievances of employees. The idea worked well for us because the organization managed to help employees with issues inhibiting them from performing optimally.
I employed my social awareness skills by creating and maintaining a friendly relationship with my colleagues and refugees in the camps. I encouraged the victims (refugees) to talk and share their predicaments and how they would like to be handled during their stay in the refugee camps. I also expressed compassion to my clients and responded politely. Initially, I thought handling the clients would be difficult, but it went well after changing my perception. I became aware that refuge individuals need great care and understanding because some are stressed about their disrupted lives (Shin et al., 2015). I have come to understand that they also need others to feel safe and loved. Therefore, I advised the organization to allow refugees to form social groups where they discuss their problems, play games, and organize educational and development programs to help them grow holistically.
I also managed to employ relationship management skills by including all employees and the refugees in the goal-setting process to assist in setting objectives and aspirations that are agreed upon by all members. The idea worked well for us because, in the end, the organization managed to restore some refugees to their ancestral lands. As employees, we managed to complete our duties on time and created friendly relationships (Ros-Morente et al., 2017). On the other, I gained the ability to connect with strangers and incorporate them into the program. I met a refugee seriously injured and unable to talk. My colleagues gave up on him. I took my time to engage with the individual by being polite and assuring my support throughout his stay in the camp. Finally, he agreed to express himself, and we managed to help him.
Three (3) Specific Areas That I Want To Continue Expanding
Despite having a rich understanding of emotional understanding, there are several areas I would like to continue expanding to help me stand a chance of engaging with colleagues and individuals needing my help.
Improving On Observing Persons.
I have realized that I must improve my observational skills because I anticipate continuing working with my organization in refugee camps. The skills will help me identify genuine refugees and other victims from malicious ones. I would also need the skill to observe my clients comprehensively and stand a chance to understand their well-being before they are engaged in the interview process.
Understanding Nonverbal Communication.
The effectiveness of communication is determined by non-verbal communication (cues). Increasing my knowledge and skills in nonverbal communication would help to mask my feelings and immediate reaction to any issue. It will also add to my ability to share meaning with colleagues.
Improving on social skills
Social skills are crucial in attaining a stable relationship between the organization, employees, and potential clients. Successful training on social skills will promote unity and hard work in the organization since all members are ready to discuss and share ways of solving an issue in the organization.
Action Plan
* I will improve my observational skills by contacting various interview experts to impart special skills to help me observe my clients effectively. I will also attend multiple meetings and games and use my observational skills to observe and record various issues happening. The idea will advance my observational skills and talents.
* Concerning nonverbal communication, I will enroll in short courses in communication to equip me with unique skills that would help me understand facial expressions and other body language to understand their problems. The know...
