Concepts to Estimate Task and Project Durations and the Use of Gantt Charts
Q1 ……….best-case estimate, probable-cause estimate, and worst-case estimate, how can a project manager use these concepts to estimate task and project durations?
Q2: What are the advantages in the use of Gantt charts over PERT diagrams? In what ways might PERT diagrams be advantageous?
Q3: The advantage of Gantt charts lies in their linkage to the project schedule baseline. Explain the pros and cons of this concept…….
Q4: What are some of the advantages in the use of AOA notation as opposed to AON? Under what circumstances does it seem better to apply AON methodology in network development?
Q5: “The shortest total length of a project is determined by the longest path through the network.” Explain the concept behind this statement. Why does the longest path determine the shortest project length?
Q6: Multi-tasking can have an important negative impact on your ability to resource level a project. When your team members are involved in multiple additional commitments, we must be careful not to assign their time too optimistically. In fact, it has been said: “Remember, 40 hours is not the same as one week’s work.” Comment on this idea. How does multi-tasking make it difficult to accurately resource level a project?

Q1
A project manager can use the concepts of best-case estimate, probable-cause estimate, and worst-case estimate to project task and project durations by considering the risk associated with the task or project. The three point-estimation technique involves analyzing the risks or challenges associated with a task and providing a realistic timeline of when the project is likely to be completed. For instance, the project manager can give an optimistic estimate for a project that has very few challenges, a pessimistic estimate for a project riddled with problems or interferences, and a probable-cause estimate as the average of the other two estimates.
Q2
One of the advantages in using Gantt charts over PERT diagrams is the fact that they are not as complicated as the latter and are generally easier to understand. Unlike PERT diagrams which are time-consuming to revise, Gantt charts can be easily modified as the project progresses and the project manager has real-time perspective of the entire scheme (Bagshaw, 2021). However, PERT charts might be advantageous during the planning phase when the project manager wants an in-depth overview of all the activities involved, their connection to each other, and projected completion dates.
Q3
The advantages of Gantt charts’ linkage to the project schedule baseline include the ability to project the amount of time needed for each task, clearly outline task responsibilities, and convey the project’s progress. However, the cons of this concept are the need for consistent updating and lack of clarity on the amount of work per activity (Hirakata et al., 2022). Furthermore, Gantt charts are only visual aids for project implementation and things can easily become complex in large projects.
