I have learned a lot from this course on leadership and management, specifically in health and human service, which has gradually changed my leadership outlook. Initially, my leadership outlook was based on results instead of the 'how' and 'what.' My perception and judgment of a good leader were one who gets more positive results regarding numbers. I believe in leadership styles such as transactional leadership, where the healthcare executives create rules and highlight their expectations, and the staff delivers by explicitly obeying without question.
The transactional leadership style is most utilized in most healthcare institutions I have visited. However, although positive results are felt, adverse outcomes outweigh the benefits. For instance, transactional leadership is easy to comprehend and follow, the staff can see the results, and it tags fairness. However, it does not focus on building robust professional relationships between the executives and staff, it is almost impossible to settle for rewards that suit and motivate all staff, it does not steer creativity and innovation, the long-term vision is usually blurry, and there is poor development of leaders and opportunities.
