Behavioral Interview Definition and Pros and Cons:
Behavioral interviewing is a widely-used assessment tool to gauge a candidate's potential in a role. The technique relies on the assumption that a candidate's past behavior is an indicator of their future performance, thus the interviewer will ask questions related to the applicant's experiences in previous roles (Elliott, 2022). Through the responses given, the interviewer can unearth the candidate's aptitudes, talents, conduct, and knowledge, and render a judgment on their suitability for the task at hand.
Pros:
1 Behavioral interviews are more effective in predicting future behavior than traditional interviews.
2 They can provide insight into a candidate’s thought processes, decision-making abilities, and work ethic.
3 They can reveal an applicant’s problem-solving skills, communication style, and ability to work under pressure.
Cons:
1 Behavioral interviewing is a time-intensive process that necessitates greater preparation than a traditional interview.
2 If the interviewer is inexperienced or uninitiated in this technique, they may be unable to query or probe effectively.
3 These interviews can be subjective and open to bias.
Organizations’ Use of Behavioral Interviews to Hire Employees:
Before crafting the list of behavioral interview questions, it is crucial to comprehend the organization's core competencies, desired behaviors, and qualities in job seekers. To ensure impartial evaluation and ease of comparison, organizations must embrace the STAR system and adopt a scorecard to curb interviewer bias.
