Introduction
Kenya is a beautiful country situated on the eastern periphery of the African continent surrounded by countries like Ethiopia, Somalia, Tanzania, and Uganda. This country boasts one of the fastest and largest economies in East and Central Africa with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of over $190 billion. Due to its attractive economic prospects, Kenya has solidified itself as a commercial hub, thereby, attracting a host of prestigious organizations and enterprises to set up base in it. The capital city of Kenya, Nairobi, is the seat of most of these foreign bodies and acts as the financial capital of Kenya and Africa. Coca-Cola, IBM, Airtel, General Electric, UN-Habitat, and UN Environment all have offices or headquarters in Nairobi. The capital city is the seat of power as it houses the arms of the national government of Kenya. This country is home to the globe’s foremost non-profits and multinationals, which invites some foreign nationals to call it their home. If one is going to work there, it is beneficial to appreciate what this country has to offer.
Short History of Kenya
Kenya, like almost all African countries, was a colony of one of the European nations, in this case, Britain. It became a protectorate of the British Empire in 1895 and gained its independence after much struggle and effort on the part of its freedom fighters dubbed the 'Mau Mau' in 1963. In the subsequent year, 1964, Kenya became a republic. Currently, Kenya is flourishing as a democratic state and can aptly be described as a presidential constitutional republic. It is head by a president, Uhuru Kenyatta, the son of the first president of Kenya. This country is famously known as a successful tourist spot and for its Olympic gold medalist marathon and track runners. Recently, Eliud Kipchoge set a new world record by completing a marathon in under two hours. Other notable figures who hail or are associated with this nation and are a testament of its greatness include Lupita Nyong’o, a Grammy-award winning actress and our former president Barack Obama’s father.
Visa Requirements
Now on to more weighty and technical matters, one must abide by the law of this land if they intend to inhabit it. Therefore, in this section, we will explore what its immigration laws demand of foreigners. As aforementioned, Kenya is home to many prestigious global institutions and enterprises. Rigorous legal processes must be adhered to by foreigners who wish to enjoy a fruitful and encumbered, not to mention legal, stay in Kenya.
The Citizenship and Immigration Act of Kenya which revised in 2012, stipulates that an alien must possess a valid work permit, residence permit or special pass to engage in any manner of meaningful employment, to live for an extended time, or to be allowed in its borders respectively. Ergo, it is unlawful for a foreigner to be found working without a permit or for an employer to employ the foreigner while possessing the full knowledge that they do not possess the proper legal documents. Every employer must submit an application to the relevant authorities to obtain a work permit or, otherwise, a special pass on behalf of their foreign employee. The Director of Immigration Services is sanctioned by the Citizenship and Immigration Act to check, without prior notice, places of employment for potential rule-breaking conduct. Additionally, the employer is not permitted to employ a foreign national on different contractual terms than the ones permitted by the status of the referent alien. If and when the foreign national ceases to work for the employer, the employer is mandated to inform the Director of Immigration Services in no more than fifteen (15) days. Put it simply, do not attempt to disobey the law or risk deportation (Georgina, 2018).
You can acquire either a single entry or multi-journey visa depending on how many times you expect to enter and leave the state if visiting for shorter periods. For an extended stay, both a residence and work permit are demanded by the state. Irrespective of the visa choice you make, a standard set of documents is expected during the application.

To supplement your valid visa, once you set foot in the country, in no more than 3 months you must inform and register with the police or Immigration Department. They will provide you with a valid alien identification document. All you have to present to them are your passport, passport photos, fingerprints, and a small application fee.
Where to Live
Upon successful entry into the country, you must decide where to live. First, there exists an assortment of world-class hotels that you can choose from as you buy time to understand your residential choices assuming you will be staying in the capital which is in the interior or along the coast in Mombasa.
