Introduction
Inequality in society is demonstrated by the existence of disparity between the rich and the poor. A large population of the people in modern society is considered to be earning below-average incomes which cannot afford them basic human needs. These people living under the poverty line have difficulty in accessing and affording basic human needs. Almost everything in this world have monetary value; thus, the constant need for financial resources. The disparity between the poor and the rich is a result of differences in the accessibility of resources such as education, shelter, money among others (Smith, 2015). The rich have access to many opportunities because they continue to gain more wealth through a further investment of the financial resources at their disposal. The poor continue to wallow in poverty while the rich utilize their resources to enrich themselves even more.
According to research, it is argued by scholars that most of the rich individuals continue to gain wealth through further investment with their financial resources. As claimed by Smith Laura in Psychology, Poverty, and the end of Social Exclusion: Putting Our Practice to Work (2015), each person has a role to play in eradicating poverty. He added further that most rich people tend to neglect those who are less fortunate (Smith, 2015). Narayan Deepa in Poverty is Powerlessness and Voicelessness (2017) believes that poverty is confined to a group. Decent policies, resulting from awareness, would contribute in lessening poverty. The line drawn between people of different classes should be eliminated to slowly close the gap among rich and poor. The two social classes are independent and, in most cases, the rich arrange their own to privileged opportunities (Narayan, 2017).
With the lack of opportunities, underprivileged people tend to fall behind in the fast growing society. These population have a shortage of access to basic commodities in every day life. Some are just living paycheck to paycheck on a daily basis. On the other hand, the rich population have been enjoying privileges and opportunities according to their wants and needs. The rich have alienated themselves from the poor. In line with this, this paper aims to describe how discrimination takes place in the face of opportunities for underprivileged people.

Access to amenities such as schools, hospitals, trading centers among others have become increasingly a privilege whom only most rich people can afford. Healthcare is one of the most crucial aspect to have an access on. However, most healthcare facility requires a health insurance. Healthcare services would deem inaccessible to people who can’t afford such thing. Thus, compromising their health. Ensuring they have equal access to healthcare, people belonging to this population would be able to enjoy the same quality of healthcare services as the privileged (Narayan, 2017).
Another essential amenity is education. Known as the “key to success,” education is a a stepping stone in achieving a successful career. Accessing quality education by individuals make it easy for them to explore different opportunities within society. However, different types of education exist and accessing high quality standard requires expensive monetary investments. The disparity between the rich and the poor makes it impossible for the latter to access quality education. Individuals with a prominent background are more likely to access such type of information that later offers them more opportunities for career and personal development (Kanashiro & Starik, 2016). Since people from various walks of life are expected to compete in the same job market, only those with quality education are prioritized to get employed. The poor remain unemployed and the cycle continues for generations (Smith, 2015).
Inequality in resource distribution in society is also considered a primary factor contributing to the poor lacking opportunities. Ideally, equitable distribution of resources by governments among other authorities should be done in a manner that fosters the development and that creates opportunities for the poor people. Research indicates that most resources are available to the rich people who continue to enrich themselves while leaving the poor to wallow in poverty for long periods. For instance, when resources are equally distributed across regions in a country depending on their developmental needs, poor people get the opportunity to participate in the development projects. Such participation, therefore, results in the improvement of their living standards as well as safeguarding those of future generations (Smith, 2015).
