Required Journal Entry 9: Comparison and Contrast
Review Abigail Zuger's “Defining a Doctor, with a Tear, a Shrug, and a Schedule” on pages
403–405. Describe an experience you've had with a doctor or other medical professional.
(1 paragraph, 5 sentences)
Compare/contrast: List the similarities and the differences of your own experience, showing

sentences)
Required Journal Entry 5: Public Space
Reread Brent Staples' essay “Black Men and Public Space” on pages 160–162. Explore the ways
you and individuals around you “alter public space.” Include specific examples from your life. You
may wish to describe a situation in which your intentions were misunderstood or when someone
made false assumptions about you. Another option is to discuss times when you've had to change
your behavior to accommodate someone else's needs or expectations. (2 paragraphs, 5 sentences

Freewrite about the way errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation can alter the public space
between writer and reader in an essay. (1 paragraph, 5 sentences)
Required Journal Entry 10: Classification and Division
Review “Generating Ideas” on pages 421–423. Using either Method 1
or Method 2, explore the reasons students may be tempted to cheat
on one or more assignments in their college program. Whichever
method you choose, identify the principle of classification or division
and devise a set of categories or parts in which you list the examples,
situations, or other details you would use to describe each
category or part. You may simulate a graphic organizer.
Required Journal Entry 15: Course Reflection
Reflect: Reread what you wrote for Journal Entry 1: “Me, a Writer?” Compare and contrast your
attitude then with your attitude now. Reflect on how knowing who you are as a learner has helped
you with the course activities. Reflect on ways you've changed as a writer, reader, and/or thinker
throughout the course. (3 paragraphs, 5 sentences each)
Evaluate: Evaluate this English Composition course. Explain what you found most helpful, least
understandable, and/or least helpful. Suggest ways to improve the course so it better accomplishes
its objectives for college students. (2 paragraphs, 5 sentences each)

Journal Entry 9: Comparison and Contrast
Being a physician is not like any other job, as it requires one to be a more rounded person than the average staff. I leant this during my fast days in the practice, as an intern, while working under the supervision of one doctor Webb. My experience relates to the story of the two interns under the writer of the article, ‘Defining a Doctor, with a Tear, a Shrug, and a Schedule’.
Similarities
In my case, we were two of us and like the gentleman I never worked too hard (Zuger, 2004).
Like the gentleman, I was in by the time it clocked 7 AM, an hour earlier, this would give me time to plan my day.
Contrary to the man in the article, if any of my patients died, it would leave me feeling horrible for several hours.
Unlike the man, we both cared about our patients, giving them all the attention that they need.
Like the man in the article I would take some time off on the weekend.
Differences
I gave some extra hours at the end of the shift.
My colleague was more of the lady in the article who would breakdown emotionally.
In the evening I would always leave at 5 PM but, unlike the gentleman most of the time I would find myself working late when my patients needed close attention.
The other intern on the other hand was different from me as she worked extra hours every other shift.
My colleague was mostly immersed in their duties, like the lady in the article without breaks.
I have always tried to balance between my duties as a physician and other life activities, although it is hard because they all require great amount of attention (Zuger, 2004).
Journal Entry 5: Public Space
Like the case of Brent in the essay, ‘Black Men and Public Space’ most African Americans have been the victims of racism that altered the space around them. There have been several cases that have happened in our class but the most vivid one was during my sophomore year. My class had a majority of Caucasian students and two African American. That fateful Monday, one of the African American was home, sick. When a laptop belonging to one of the students went, missing, everyone thought the African American had something to do with it. One of the security personnel caught a Caucasian student who had stolen the laptop trying to sell it to a freshman. Weeks that followed everyone became overly kind to him, while he tried to hide the fact that he felt out of place by being friendly to the same people that were hell bound to get him expelled (Zuger, 2004).
Grammatical errors can alter the space between the reader and the writer, by altering the meaning of the content. For most as far as the message comes across, the grammar correctness does not count. However it does, as seen in this example. ‘I need my phone, battery and case’ is not as the same as ‘I need my phone, battery and case’. It therefore means that even a simple punctuat...
