Culture refers to the social behaviors that individuals from various societies exhibit as a result of common principles and ideals. Identity, on the other hand, refers to a person's self-perception as a member of a specific group.
Define “Essentialism”. Give one example of essentialism not listed in the book or lecture.
The belief that at least some objects have a common nature, or a collection of qualities that make something or an entity what it is. For example, the idea that females are more emotional than men creates an assumption that emotions are an essential part of women.
Define “Othering”. Give one example of othering not listed in the book or lecture.
Impression or depiction of a person or group of people as profoundly different from another, often more powerful, group. For instance, seniors in school consider juniors as others due to their perceived smaller age.
Why is term “model minority” problematic for describing the various Asian-American populations? How have views on Asian-Americans and Asian people changed over time? In your opinion, do Asia Americans suffer from discrimination? Explain your answer.
‘Model minority’ ignores other forms of discrimination that Asian-Americans may face due to such generalizations. More people are now understanding the challenges that Asian-Americans face with their portrayals now offering different perspectives on their lifestyles, traditions, and beliefs. Asian-Americans suffer from discrimination since they are considered perpetual foreigners focussed on assimilating into different communities.
Feminist scholars Kimberlй Crenshaw and Andrea Ritchie contend that very often African-American women are excluded from national conversations about racial profiling, police brutality, and lethal force. Do black women experience these things? If so, why are they not discussed?
Black women may experience a number of profiling, brutality, and use of lethal force by police due to their vulnerability to street violence. The lack of discussions on a national scale may be due to their ability to cope with such situations and the lack of trust in the systems put in place to protect them from such.

Systematic dimensions of racism that have been actively and passively, consciously and unconsciously maintained in society to protect eh interests of white people. For instance, a white person who commits a heinous crime will be described as a humble family man, but a black person found to have committed a small crime will be labelled a danger to society.

The cultural representations of Black people created stereotypes since slavery forced them to engage in activities not perceived to be done by whites.
