1 The World is Flat was published in 2005. Once Tom Friedman finished the book he thought he would be able to return to the business of being a journalist, comfortable with the ‘framework’ that he had established. Then 2007 happened and challenged his thinking. How does he explain how the year 2007 altered his “view of how the Machine worked” in his chapter "What the Hell Happened in 2007"?
In his work, Friedman (2017) noted that while he thought he has already deciphered the right framework for understanding the relationship between labor and machines together, the sudden changes that happened back in 2007 has definitely shifted how his framework applies. Prior to the year 2007, Friedman thought that dominance of the internet would define the workforce. However, a few years after he wrote his book, he realized that disruptive innovations have occurred in just two short years from such as the development of the iPhone, the continuous dominance of Facebook, as well as the advances in changing the human genome. Based on how these ‘machines’ have become more essential in our lives after the ‘2007 innovations’ Friedman revised his paradigm and believed that now, the actions of each person would have more effect on other individuals, the environment, and even the society as a whole.
