Reflect on your parents’ parenting style. Describe if your understanding of your parents' parenting style changed as you got older. Describe the family influences that impacted your parents' parenting style and your behavior growing up.
My parents mainly employed authoritative style of parenting involving a good balance of high expectations and warmth, and open-ended communication. When I became old, I understood that their structure had been driven by the desire to make me grow up being independent and responsible and not controlled. Their style depended on cultural values and the support of extended family, which promoted the values of respect and empathy and facilitated the emotional stability and confidence.
Based on Piaget and Erikson-Pediatric Nursing Principles presented in the video, explain how the developmental stage of the child influences their behavior and what is the best way for a parent to redirect a child at each developmental stage.
Piaget believes that cognitive development of children plays a role in the way children think and act according to their surroundings, whereas Erikson focuses on psychosocial stages which influence the level of trust, autonomy, and identity (Level Up RN, 2021). The parents are expected to redirect the toddlers by using safe options and redirect the preschoolers by encouraging and playing. In school-age children, positive reinforcement and communication are valuable in solving problems and emotional control (Lv et al., 2025).
Reflect on how the different types of families may impact how a child is reprimanded/redirected.
Family structure affects the methods of discipline and consistency. A nuclear family could be influenced by two parents working together, without similar circumstances in single-parent families, where the stress experienced might disrupt good discipline. In binuclear or blended families, there is a need of coordination of households to ensure that a consistent set of expectations is upheld. Extended families may also provide additional support and act as the hedge against the lack of consistent discipline (Longo et al., 2024).
