Home Activity – Energy Usage Analysis

In this activity, you will use gas and electric bills to determine your energy consumption profile. You will also be calculating the cost difference between these two energy sources to identify which option is most cost effective.

Examples of an electric bill and a gas bill.

The objectives of this activity are to:

Analyze the home energy usage pattern.

Determine the relative percentages of energy sources you depend on and the relative costs of each of those energy sources.

****Go to https://activity.e-education.psu.edu/2 if you can. If you need access please contact me directly for the credentials. Please make sure your IP address is within the United States.***

Procedure

To complete this activity, you must complete the steps outlined below.

    1.Print table (pdf format).

2.View monthly gas and electric bills.

3.Enter information into the printed PDF

4.Respond to questions based on analysis of energy usage on PDF.

Gas Data Collection:

Gather data from the bill and enter it into the PDF.

  • Review each month’s expenditures

  • Enter the appropriate values into the PDF.

As you complete this activity, please remember that for the house in this project, it uses two types of energy sources. Gas and Electric

The following appliances run on electricity: Lights, Festival Lighting, Refrigerator, Dishwasher, Clothes Washer and Dryer, Air Conditioner, Microwave Oven, Toaster, Television, VCR, Stereo, X-Box, Computer, Ceiling Fan, Clothes

The following run on natural gas: Oven, Cooking Range, Water Heater, Home Heating System

Coursework Sample Content Preview:

Based on the data provided, it is visible that the consumption of natural gas is greater during winter season that corresponds to the months of December, January and February than the consumption during warm and hot weather which begins in June and continues until August and September. As shown in the table above, CCF's usage is highest in January and lowest in August. The reason behind is that natural gas is consumed more to run home heating system in maintaining temperatures at an acceptable level during cold weather. On the other hand, during summer season, switching on heating systems is not essential, hence, natural gas is less used. ...
