The film portrays confusion and fear of accused families, and how officials are usually under pressure to prevent attacks, and also shows that many people who are suspected of causing terror are living in the country. That means they are not foreign fighters. This discussion explores what the families of the accused think and the problems that counter-terrorism officials face. Affected families feel pain, confusion, and even anger. In Homegrown: The Counter-Terror Dilemma (2016), the family members acknowledge that their relatives were simply people who could never have tried violence. They also think that their family was the target because they happened to be Muslim or come from other countries. Some family members reported that the FBI showed up to interview them many times and followed their relatives. They feel that the government views every little thing they do online as a threat, when in reality they mean no harm. Then, when there is an arrest, the family is in utter shock because they never expected such a harsh sentence. Some families may also believe that it is completely unfair and shameful for the way the government has treated them, as if the whole family was a danger. This makes them feel isolated from society.
