Monitoring and supervising juveniles is a sensitive issue. It is essential to find an effective method of supervising them that upholds the law and ethics. Arguably, the society we live in is intolerant of criminals, despite their age, mental capacity, or other underlying factors. Michele Deitch, in her TedTalk, described the plight facing juveniles in a society where they are supervised and tried in adult law courts under adult policies and rules (Deitch, 2014). She argues that many children are lost in adult jails and prisons sentenced to long terms without the possibility of parole. Ideally, this disrupts the children’s growth, and they are thrown away as outcast criminals. However, the juvenile criminal system has a better way of supervising, punishing, and correcting juveniles. The system is rehabilitative rather than punitive. As Deitch argues, many individuals who have passed through the system have successful lives, integrated with communities, and live well with people.
