Module 1
In Chapter 1, we will distinguish ethical issues and ethical dilemmas. We will explain why studying ethics is especially important to criminal justice professionals. The most important thing to remember is that we all encounter situations where we must determine the ethical or moral course of action. Chapter 2 will review how ethical systems provide the guidelines or principles to make moral decisions. We will also consider that none of us is perfect; we all have committed immoral or unethical acts that we know are wrong. Ethical systems help us understand or analyze morality, but knowing what is right does not guarantee that we will always do the right thing.

CCJ 4054 CRITICAL THINKING MINI ASSIGNMENT 1
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this assignment is to enhance your critical thinking skills through a “mini” writing assignment.
What is critical thinking? It is the ability to think rationally and clearly, understanding the logical connection between concepts and ideas. It requires you to be an active learner rather than just a PASSive recipient of knowledge and information. Critical thinking is a way of thinking about specific things at a specific time. It is not just the accumulation and recollection of facts that you can use in the same format down the line as you would with a grammar or multiplication table learned in elementary school. Critical thinking is an adaptive skillset that helps enable a way of thinking about whatever the issue/argument is to arrive at the best possible conclusion/solution.
TASK:
You must write an original post of at least 250 words showing your critical analysis of the problem or issue presented. This is free writing, but your writing must be professional, and you are still required to properly use and cite at least 2 external sources in APA format and style (the textbook may count as one external source). After all, you cannot truly think critically without understanding the issue, and you cannot understand the issue without first gathering (accurate) information about it. Additionally, you are required to respond to at least 1 other student’s “mini” by providing constructive feedback in a respectful and professional manner.
Helpful Resources:
APA formatting – for more information on how to use and properly cite in APA formatting, please use the following resources:

Remember, this won’t be the last time you must write in APA formatting. This is the best time to learn and ask questions to succeed in your future courses and overall academic journey.
ASSIGNMENT TOPIC: WHO SHOULD OWN THE VIOLIN?
Watch the following video - Who Should Own the ViolinLinks to an external site.
THE QUESTIONS YOU NEED TO ANSWER IN YOUR “MINI”:
What does it mean for a decision to be just?
how do you arrive at a just decision?
Who should own the violin and why?
CRITERIA:
Your assignment will be graded based on the following checklist:
Organization –
Did you write at least 250 words?
Are your sentences in a logical and cohesive order?
Topic –
Does your “mini” answer the three questions above?
Formatting –
Did you access the resources provided above to familiarize yourself with APA style formatting?
Is your writing in APA style formatting?
Did you include properly formatted APA in-text citations?
Did you include a works cited page or sources page in APA style formatting?
Mechanics –
Did you read your paper out loud to check for any grammatical errors?
Did you write in complete sentences, punctuate correctly, and use a spell checker?
Feedback –
Did you respond to at least one other student and provide constructive feedback in a professional and respectful manner? I have provided an example from another class of what constructive feedback should look like:
**If you have answered “yes” to all these questions, congratulations – you are ready to submit your critical thinking mini! Good luck!
As always, please feel free to ask any questions before submitting the assignment. I look forward to reading your posts and seeing your growth and improvement in your critical thinking throughout the rest of the semester!

Critical Thinking Mini #1
Criminal justice professionals often encounter ethical dilemmas, where they have to select a choice based on competing interests. In such a situation, one may ask themselves, what does it mean for a decision to be just? Well, I believe a decision that is just is one that is done in accordance with the law. I think it is important for one to ask themselves whether the decision made follows the law. According to Goldman and Cropanzano (2015), justice occurs when the decision-maker complies with what is stated in the law. Given this understanding, it is safe to say that a just decision follows the provisions of the law. Therefore, for one to make a ...
