The courtroom setting involves various actors, including the judge, prosecutor, and defense attorney. Each of these players has a distinct role and responsibility in the legal process, and they face ethical challenges in performing their duties. In this discussion, I will describe the roles and responsibilities of the judge, prosecutor, and defense attorney and their ethical challenges.
The judge is the legal expert who presides over the court proceedings and ensures they are conducted according to the law. The judge is responsible for making decisions on the admissibility of evidence, providing legal instructions to the jury, and passing a sentence if the defendant is found guilty (Siegel & Worrall, 2022). The judge also has the authority to impose sanctions on attorneys who engage in unethical behavior, such as violating the rules of professional conduct or misleading the court. The ethical issues that judges face include impartiality, avoiding conflicts of interest, and ensuring that the defendant receives a fair trial.
In contrast, the prosecutor is a lawyer who represents the government and is responsible for presenting evidence against the defendant in criminal cases.
