Locking and blocking are synonymous with SQL servers and the completion of transactions. Locking is activated when a piece of data can be accessed by any process when another concurrent process will need the same data at the same time. Therefore, locking of the data ensures that the expected action takes place. For example, when reading data, it is expected the latest data to be accessed first. Therefore, when updating the data, it is recommended to ensure no other process is updating simultaneously. On the other hand, blocking is activated when two processes require access to specific data at the same time. Therefore, one process locks the data to prevent other processes from accessing it and waits for the transaction to be completed, and the data is released for the waiting processes (Gutzait, 2015). An example of blocking in a transaction is illustrated below:
