Following the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, and Saddam Hussein’s government disintegrating, Maj. Gen. David Petraeus who commanded the 101st Airborne Division needed to control the city of Mosul. After the combat mission, the 101st order control of Mosul in Nineveh province to ensure stability. There was focus on reconstruction and governance at a time when there was lack of political authority in Mosul. Maj. Gen. David Petraeus provided clarity on who was to execute the stability operations. In the absence of an effective government in a mission command, the military play a crucial role in stability operations. Effective execution and implementation of mission command required teamwork and is necessary in rebuilding and guaranteeing security for the people.
