In this assignment, I had the privilege of conducting a family-focused functional assessment for a family. After obtaining consent, I developed an interview questionnaire to assess the family's health perception, including their sleep nutrition, cognitive, and other Gordon's functional health patterns. The Gordons model of assessment is a crucial tool primarily because it provides a holistic assessment model for families classified under 11 headings (Hooper, 2018). Therefore, based on the information I gathered during the interview, I will summarize my assessment findings and analyze the family's health behaviors, including strengths and barriers.
Describe the family structure
The family I interviewed was a blended family, where the husband was a widow with two children, aged 10 and 15. The wife, on the other hand, was divorced and had a single child, three years old, and she was already six months pregnant with their first child. They have been living together for only two years. The father is the CEO of pulp Industries, while the mother is a nurse. The family of African American descent are Christians and belong to the high-class social stratum. They have managed to build their home in an affluent suburb. The family stated that they love staying in their outdoor spaces, especially when having dinner, and indicated that they feel a sense of neighborhood in their space.
Summarize the overall health behaviors of the family. Describe the current health of the family.
From the interview, the health behaviors of the family can be described as being commendable, and the husband attributed the behavior to the wife, a nurse. This emphasizes the role of education in better healthcare behaviors. Research indicates that individuals with higher education tended to live a healthier lifestyle than their less educated counterparts (Raghupathi & Raghupathi, 2020). Hence, their approach was more proactive in healthcare, emphasizing nutrition and fitness.
The family also engages in family workouts, especially on weekends, in their gym room. The wife states that her ability to exercise also determines her child's growth, especially during pregnancy. She gets an experienced instructor to help her with the same to ensure her safety. The three-year-old girl joins the family occasionally to try and copy-paste what the others are doing. This is particularly important because it creates a healthy lifestyle for them, and the children can learn throughout their livelihood. Sometimes, they leave their car behind and go for family walks, not specifically for their health, but for family bonding. However, the role of walks in health promotion cannot be ignored.
Based on your findings, describe at least two of the functional health pattern strengths noted in the findings. Discuss three areas in which health problems or barriers to health were identified.
The family reported that they had a good relationship altogether, and it was difficult for the community to tell that they were a blended family. The family had also agreed to co-parent with the three-year-old father because he is still a present figure in the child's life. The family also had a good nutritional-metabolic pattern, as they preferred having homemade food to fast food. No one has ever stated about having bowel issues and activities apart from occasionally for the three-year-old, who sometimes consumed unnecessary items, especially when unwatched.
The family did not report to be all perfect, as they had health problems. One of them is that the family, especially the parents, lacked good sleeping patterns, which can be attributed to their busy schedules. Sometimes the wife can go for a night shift, and due to minimal nurse staff in the facility, extending their supposed eight-hour shift was possible. Given her condition, this is particularly dangerous as it may lead to adverse maternal and fetal health outcomes (Cannon et al., 2023). On the other hand, the husband could also work past routine hours and come home late. Both parents reported having regular headaches due to work-related fatigue. Another health barrier revealed in the interview is poor stress coping mechanisms. This is especially true because the family was young, and some expectations for living together were unmet. For instance, the wife reported being stressed when the husband came home late, and she was not having enough time with him. The final problem is that the family reported administering medications independently rather than having medical checkups. The older children are admitted to knowing what drug to take and during what condition because of the mother's regular medication administration, especial...
