TH Implementation Plan
The successful implementation of the Telemental Health (TH) system will enable students in rural Slayton, Minnesota, to access mental health services remotely from counselors at St. Anthony Medical Center (SAMC). As such, various stages of the system development life cycle (SDLC), including planning, analysis, design, development, testing and integration, implementation, and maintenance, must be followed keenly. Currently, it can be hard to ignore the application of technology in individuals’ daily lives since it promotes work and healthcare service delivery effectiveness and efficiency. That is why integrating TH into the provision of counseling services to students in rural areas can foster accessibility and improved quality of mental health services.
The Adequacy of Existing Telehealth Technology Infrastructure in the Practice Setting
Numerous factors must be considered when implementing TH to ensure that its deployment is successful. They include Internet bandwidth, system interoperability, user-friendliness, technology infrastructure at Slayton, and the availability of technical support. The most significant thing about TH is that it integrates various information and communication technologies, including videoconferencing and remote monitoring, to ensure that therapists can interact with their clients appropriately (Lopez et al., 2019). Additionally, the technology should be designed and implemented depending on the available technology infrastructure at Murray County. In other words, the target population should be able to use the system optimally with their electronic devices. That is why the system should be usable across multiple platforms, such as different versions of the smartphone or laptop operating systems. TH should be user-friendly, meaning that colors should be well-chosen to facilitate easy navigation. Whenever the system is upgraded, appropriate user notifications should be done to avoid confusion and misunderstanding. Moreover, technical support should be available 24/7 to debug potential problems that might disrupt counselor-client interactions.
Hardware and software should be upgraded to accommodate TH. For instance, solid-state drives should be used and the random access memory (RAM) of computers at SAMC should be upgraded to facilitate faster data transfer. In addition, the operating systems should be upgraded to newer versions to enhance data security. However, that should not mean that TH will not be compatible with older operating systems and hardware of electronic devices. Even though SAMC might upgrade their computers, it should not hinder the clients from using the system optimally, particularly those with old electronic gadgets. The significant change that will be needed to successfully deploy TH is integrating it with existing technologies at SAMC. The areas of uncertainties include how TH will work effectively across different electronic devices, whether services might be discontinued for clients using older gadgets for data security purposes, and how to deal with new technological changes that might hinder TH interoperability.
Assigning Tasks and Responsibilities When Deploying TH
The proper task allocation is required for deploying TH successfully. All stakeholders should be allowed to participate throughout all phases of the SDLC. Some of the tasks that an individual cannot delegate include overseeing that the functional and non-functional requirements are met, testing TH, and ensuring that the data is stored securely. These are among the most significant things that when not achieved properly might render TH useless in the short and long run. Nevertheless, certain tasks might be completed by other team members. For instance, nurse leaders and counselors should work alongside system developers throughout the SDLC stages to ensure that the stated requirements are achieved. The rationale used by these healthcare professionals should rely on the client’s needs and effective interactions. Software developers will be delegated to code TH within the stipulated deadline and without omitting crucial details. They can determine the best type of SDLC to use based on the software being developed, which might include agile software development (William et al., 2021). Executives from SAMC and Villa Health Group should ensure that TH complies with the state and federal data protection regulations, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Since TH will be designed by prioritizing data security, information security experts will oversee the development process to ensure that proper security standards are achieved. Students, school officials, and parents should share their opinions about what they would like to see in the system, including the best colors or menu to use. The SDLC performance should not exceed the recommended period, and thorough testing should be done by software developers, end users, and other stakeholders to ensure that TH meets the established requirements and that it is ready for use.
Developing an Implementation Schedule
TH implementation will only occur after the system has been tested thoroughly. On that note, all the stated system requirements should be met before coming up with an implementation schedule. The SDLC phases will be strictly followed since that is the only way to ensure that TH meets its intended purpose, which is linking students in rural areas with licensed and highly skilled counselors for the provision of mental health services (William et al., 2021). After TH has been tested rigorously and found to meet end users’ needs, it will be deployed in parallel with the traditional system at SAMC. In reality, it can be risky to replace the existing technology system with a new one without determining the challenges that might be encountered. The only way to avoid this risk is by implementing TH alongside the existing system. Moreover, time is required to integrate and harmonize both systems since appropriate data must be transferred to the new system. Users might also identify specific potential problems or situations that system developers did not consider.
