Despite the significant milestones achieved in medical insurance coverage within the Affordable Care Act (ACA) framework, the United States (U.S.) is yet to achieve universal healthcare coverage like its peer nations. Universal coverage implies that all people can access high-quality and effective healthcare services without incurring financial difficulties. This paper supports the decision to replace ACA with a single-payer system because it improves care value, eliminates the need for state and employer responsibilities in achieving health coverage, and addresses equity disparities in health care.
A single-payer plan can support preventive care and management of chronic illnesses. This system allows patients to receive comprehensive health benefits and less expensive scheduled care for chronic disease management. For example, the single-payer system in Taiwan has managed to reduce the cost of emergency care by enrolling low-income individuals in the plan (American Public Health Association, 2023). It has also been established that dialysis coverage within the single-payer plan archetype is associated with reduced healthcare costs because of the lower frequency of emergency visits for dialysis. In addition, better access to high-quality and effective care includes long-term care services, vision, dental, and other health care services linked to better health care outcomes (American Public Health Association, 2023). Therefore, replacing the current ACA framework with a single-payer would guarantee better access to high-value care.
The single-payer plan would address socioeconomic disparities exacerbating healthcare outcomes in the United States. The system would create an increasingly efficient management system to facilitate healthcare savings, which can be leveraged to address health disparities that cannot be addressed using the current ACA framework. The single-payer system would disintegrate financial hurdles to care and thus assist in addressing medical rationing based on the consumer's socioeconomic status. For example, Canada's single-payer system has reduced income inequalities across the health care consumers, thus achieving equitable medical care utilization (...
