Importance of Nursing Education and Personal Educational Goals
Lera et al. (2020) posited that continuing education is mandatory for nurses because they are central to most healthcare systems worldwide, and their profession must continue to advance for the sake of patients and increased professionalism. This paper covers the area of nursing education, my learning goals, the impact of higher education on employment opportunities, and the future of nursing.
Job Market and Education Level
My present level of education is an undergraduate, which enables me to apply for the following positions in the market. Obtaining an undergraduate degree can allow me to become a registered nurse and work in communities, clinics, and hospitals. Employment opportunities for RNs are abundant today because people's lifespans continue to increase and extend, so health care is required. Additionally, there are numerous opportunities in emergency, critical care, and pediatric care, which means there are many choices for newly graduated nurses.
Therefore, it becomes important to advance in education and certification so that the person may be fit for other job opportunities. It results in leadership, employment in administrative positions, and the chance to work in certain areas of nursing, like the nurse practitioner, the clinical nurse specialist, or the nurse educator. These positions are relatively higher in education and licensing but entail a heavier workload and offer a higher-paid, more satisfying job. For example, nurse practitioners have the authority to diagnose, treat, prescribe, and even handle the care of patients, and they significantly increase the work of the nursing discipline in the sphere of a health care system.
The ‘Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity’ Report
The 'Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity' report revealed that further education of nurses remains imperative for growth in contemporary health systems and for maintaining health equity (Wakefield et al., 2021). As a result, nurses are encouraged to pursue their studies to obtain a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), or a Ph. D. because it better prepares a person for leadership, research, and practice supported by the evidence.
Sustaining the professional development process is a lifelong process that entails learning. Education enables nurses to acquire new knowledge that can supplement their practice by implementing new trends, technologies, and paradigms for delivering patient care. This continuous training ensures that the nurses extend their best towards the patients and are adequate with the ever-changing status in the health care profession.
My goal is to complete the MSN with a major in nursing education. This will help nurture future nurses who will contribute towards the development of this profession and improve the performance of nurses. To this end, I expect to enter an MSN program within the next two years and complete it within three years. To build up my academic foundation to practice Nursing as a profession, I will pursue the certification as a nurse educator (CNE) after acquiring my MSN.
