Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens the bone to the point where it can easily break. Bone-in the hip, spine, and wrist are often the most affected. It is called a silent disease because it does not have immediate apparent signs until a bone breaks. It is a metabolic bone disease that occurs at the cellular level. The condition is multifactorial because of the complex interplay of lifestyle, intrinsic, genetic, and exogenous factors that contribute to its development. It results from a lack of compensation by osteoblastic bone formation following osteoclastic bone resorption (FΡger-Samwald, Dovjak, Azizi-Semrad, Kerschan-Schindl, & Pietschmann, 2020). This results in bones becoming fragile, with an increased risk of fractures.
Treatment of osteoporosis may include lifestyle changes and medication. Among the most used drug in medicine is alendronate (Fosamax). According to Kim et al. (2020), alendronate is an effective first option weekly medication for treating bone conditions. The drug works by inhibiting osteoclast-mediated bone resorption acting as an endogenous regulator of bone t...
