A piece of Nightingale's legacy that was new to me is the fact that she was the first nurse to collect data systematically and carry out statistical analysis to justify policy proposals and treatment protocol changes (Judd & Sitzman, 2014). In a period where the role of women in society was undermined, it is interesting to learn that Nightingale’s made a contribution that is particularly relevant in today’s nursing environment. Evidence-based practice (EBP) is common in today’s healthcare as it has become a tool through which nurses can not only improve patient outcomes but also influence policy changes.
From learning about the above-stated legacy, my understanding of Nightingale and her contribution to the field of nursing has improved. Now I understand that she managed to influence policy decisions and treatment protocols based on evidence, the way it happens...
