“I was initially pursuing a business degree, but while volunteering at Children’s Hospital, I watched a pediatric nurse comfort a terrified seven-year-old before surgery. She did not just give medicine, she explained everything and stayed until he felt safe. That moment showed me the incredible difference nurses make in people’s most vulnerable moments. I changed my major the following semester.”
2 Before you became a nurse, did you work in another field besides healthcare?
“Yes, I worked three years as a healthcare business analyst for a consulting firm, analyzing hospital operations and budget management. While I enjoyed the analytical work, I felt disconnected from actual patient care. However, that business background has been invaluable in my current management role, I understand financial constraints and operational challenges that many nurses do not see.”
3 What is your current practice role title and role responsibilities?
“I am the Critical Care Unit Manager for the Medical ICU at Metropolitan General Hospital. I oversee a 32-bed unit with 48 nursing staff across all shifts. My responsibilities include staff scheduling, budget management, quality improvement initiatives, policy development, Joint Commission compliance, performance evaluations, and patient flow management. I also maintain clinical competency by taking patient assignments monthly during staffing shortages.”
4 What education, specialty certification(s), and/or memberships in professional organizations did you need to achieve your current practice role?
“My first degree was an ADN, followed by a full-time BSN, and later, my MSN in Nursing Administration was completed part-time within 3 years. I am CCRN certified and a member of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses and the American Organization of Nursing Leadership. I also completed our hospital’s Leadership Development Academy.”
5 What are the advantages of your current practice role?
“The greatest advantage is influencing patient care on a broader scale. When I implement evidence-based changes, I see impact across hundreds of patients annually. I love mentoring new nurses and watching them develop confidence.
