Question One: Spinal Trauma
Spinal trauma occurs after any part of the spinal cord is damaged, including the nerves at the ends of the cauda equina. Spinal trauma usually causes irreversible changes in the body’s strength, senses, and overall function (Couillard-Despres et al., 2017). Spinal trauma can either be complete or incomplete. Complete trauma is where one has lost all sensation and is unable to control movement. On the other hand, incomplete trauma is where the patient still has some sensory and motor functioning (Couillard-Despres et al., 2017). The signs and symptoms of spinal trauma include but are not limited to severe pain in the back, extreme weakness, inability to control the bladder, inability to balance, difficulty in breathing, and numbness. The complications associated with spinal trauma at the time of injury include the absence of bladder control.
