The learning environment can be utterly frustrating, particularly for students who are not able to understand, grasp, and comprehend the ideas and information shared by their teachers. This is usually the case when students are being taught new concepts. It is the role of teachers to ensure that they identify conducive and effective ways of passing their points across. It is on this breadth that instructional strategies were developed. In a nutshell, these strategies are mechanisms used by teachers to provide instructions in classrooms and the learning environment in general. Lattuca et al. (2014) reiterate the above statement and share, "Instructional strategies encompass any learning technique a teacher uses to help students learn or gain a better understanding of the course material". Through instructional strategies, teachers succeed in creating fun and practical learning environments (Jenkins & Allen, 2017). They also make learning more interactive and encourage students to take active roles in their education.
Instructional strategies assist students in becoming not only independent but also strategic learners. They are identified as learning strategies when students can select the appropriate ones independently to achieve stipulated tasks and objectives (Faust, 2017). This is because instructional strategies motivate students. Similarly, they improve engagement as they capture learners' attention and imagination and, in the process, not only help them remember course materials but also understand comprehensively. They also assist in the organization of information for comprehension and future reference. They are also crucial in the monitoring and assessment of learning (Constantinou, 2017). Teachers and educators who employ instructional strategies enable their students to make meaningful connections and links to the concepts they are taught in the classrooms to real-life situations and events.
There are various instructional approaches and strategies applicable in all areas and subject areas, supporting a wide range of learning styles and educational theories. They are broadly categorized into five segments and as shown in the figure below.
The first category of instructional strategies is direct instruction. It is a teacher-centered approach that sees learners highly dependent on the inputs and information from their educators. It encompasses various methods, including lectures, tutorials, handouts, and tape recordings, among others. Direct instruction is mostly employed when educating learners with inadequate information about a certain aspect (Constantinou, 2017). Secondly, there is also an individual or independent study. According to Ali (2018), "Independent study is an individualized learning experience that allows students to select a topic focus, define problems or questions, gather and analyze information, apply skills, and create a product to show what has been learned". It is effectively used in junior health programs and upper elementary as it allows learners to gather and analyze and report information (Faust, 2017). It also works best with students with a mastery of basic research skills and possesses high self-directedness levels.
The third category is indirect instruction. This instructional strategy is effective for students who are inquisitive and are continuously seeking to discover new knowledge. Some of the notable methods used include case studies, focused imaging, problem-solving, and concert mapping, among others (Faust, 2017). Fourthly, there is also an experiential instructional strategy. As the name suggests, it purposes to offer students experiences of what they are being taught. It encompasses methods such as field observation, case studies, skits, role-playing, and model building, among others. Lastly, there is interactive instruction, otherwise known as cooperative learning. It entails setting up students in small groups to complete assigned tasks and projects. As such, success is not pegged on an individual but on group performance (Jenkins & Allen, 2017). Some of the interactive instruction activities include buzz groups, open discussions, role-playing, panels, problem-solving, and brainstorming, among others.
