Infectious Diseases and Control Interventions Against Them
•Exposure to an infectious agent does not always lead to an infection and vice versa.
•Infection: the entry, development, and multiplication of the infectious agent in the susceptible host
•Disease: possible outcomes of infection; may indicate physiologic dysfunction or pathologic reaction
•Incubation period: time interval between invasion by an infectious agent and the first appearance of signs and symptoms of the disease
•Communicable period: interval during which an infectious agent may be transferred directly or indirectly from an infected person to another person
Disease spectrum
•Persons with infectious diseases may exhibit a broad spectrum of disease that ranges from subclinical infection to severe and fatal disease.
•At the community level, the disease may occur in endemic, epidemic, or pandemic proportions.
• Endemic: the constant presence of a disease within a geographic area or a population
• Epidemic: the occurrence of disease in a community or region in excess of normal expectancy
• Pandemic: an epidemic occurring worldwide and affecting large populations

Infectious Diseases
In the United States, minority groups are most severely affected by infectious diseases. For example, for COVID-19, the hospitalization risk of African Americans is 2.5 times that of whites (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases [NIAID], 2022). Regarding Tuberculosis, 87% of cases occur in ethnic and racial minorities, particularly among Asians, African Americans, and Hispanics (NIAID, 2022). The high impact of infectious diseases among minority groups is attributed to limited healthcare care access and medical mistrust, leading to late diagnosis and inadequate disease management (Evans, 2020).
Worldwide, people from middle and low-income countries are most severely affected by infectious diseases. TB affects African and South East Asian regions the most (WHO, 2022), while HIV majorly affects the African region (WHO, n.d.). People from these regions are most affected because of low socioeconomic status.
Depending on the type of infectious disease, control interventions can be implemented at the three levels of intervention. At the primary level, immunizations can be administered to prevent disease progression (Kisling & Das, 2022). At the secondary level, screening can be done so that diseases can be identified before symptoms occur. As for the tertiary level of intervention, patients who are symptomatic can receive rehabilitative services ...
