High-range theories can be considered grand theories because they are the most abstract and broad theories. Middle-range theories are more precise and can be used in identifying an intervention because they narrowly focus on a phenomenon. Low-range theories are theories that examine a very specific, single phenomenon (McEwen & Wills, 2019). Unlike low-range theories, middle-range theories explore several operationally defined concepts. Middle range theories are also used to produce a hypothesis that can be tested. One example of a middle-range theory is the theory of comfort which was first developed by Katherine Kolcaba in 1994. The theory is based on the premise that comfort is a basic need for relief, transcendence, or ease among all human beings experiencing a stressful healthcare condition McEwen & Wills, 2019). This need for comfort, arising from care, promotes health-seeking behavior.
