At the cellular level, viruses like herpes simplex or mosquito-borne viruses infect brain cells and cause damage, leading to an immune response (Hiesgen & Schutte, 2023). Although intended to combat the infection, this response can also be toxic to neighboring healthy neurons. At the tissue level, swelling occurs in the brain, which is made up of very soft tissues that interfere with the communication between different parts of the brain (Hiesgen & Schutte, 2023). At the organ level, the brain can no longer manage simple tasks such as regulating emotions, movements, or memory. Systemically, the body responds with symptoms such as fever and fatigue to combat the infection. Encephalitis can occur in anyone, but some people are at higher risk than others. These are children below the age of 15, older people, and those with compromised immune systems. In the United States alone, about 20,000 people are affected by encephalitis yearly (Boucher et al., 2017). High mosquito density regions and countries with low vaccination coverage record many cases worldwide. For instance, Japanese encephalitis, an illness resulting from a virus transmitted by a mosquito, is common in some parts of Asia. Risk Factors: What Increases an Individual’s Chances? Weakened Immune System. Conditions like HIV or treatments such as chemotherapy reduce the body’s ability to fight infections, making encephalitis more likely. Age. The very young and elderly are more at risk because their immune systems are either not fully developed or less effective (Murray et al., 2006). Exposure to Mosquitoes or Ticks. Spending time in areas with these insects increases the likelihood of contracting viruses like West Nile or Lyme disease, which can lead to encephalitis. Clinical Manifestations Patients with encephalitis might experience the following. Headache. It occurs due to swelling in the brain, causing pressure inside the skull. Fever. A common sign that the body is fighting an infection. Confusion or Memory Issues. Swelling disrupts brain processes and recalls information (Halsby et al., 2024). Seizures. Abnormal electrical activity in the brain can lead to seizures. Light Sensitivity. Brain inflammation can make bright light painful to the eyes.
