The article “A Guide to Empowering Frontline Nurses and Healthcare Clinicians Through Evidence-Based Innovation Leadership during COVID-19 and beyond” is a useful guide that outlines several leadership principles that nurse leaders can use to lead clinicians on the front lines during the pandemic. One evidence-based example of innovation leadership is maximizing one’s presence through participatory leadership. Mosadeghrad & Ferdosi (2013) discovered that participatory leadership, typified by administrators who lead alongside their frontline colleagues, is an effective way to improve staff satisfaction. Despite my many responsibilities and work restrictions, I discovered that communicating with my colleagues on the frontlines via emails, voicemails, and video conferencing allowed me to effectively practice participatory leadership.
Another evidence-based example of innovation leadership is following the evidence and innovating to fill in gaps: Ackerman, Giuliano, & Malloch (2020) assert that leaders must learn to be agile in order to be effective, particularly during this trying COVID-19 pandemic period. After learning how to fill in gaps where evidence does not exist, I have discovered that disrupting the system is part and parcel of being an effective innovation leader.
