The review article identifies how the problem of antimicrobial resistance has resulted in the need to strengthen measures such as antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP) in today’s healthcare facilities. Some of the strategies identified in the paper include formulary preauthorization and restriction and prospective audit compounded with intervention and feedback. The quality and impact of ASP can be measured by outcome or process measures. In the review, 63 studies are included to assess the impact and quality of ASP. The main objective of the research was to offer an overview of measures of assessing ASP with the main focus on patient outcomes.

The study design used was literature review of the articles related to the topic of discussion.

Literature search conducted using a combination of relevant search terms. English papers published between 1990 to June 2015 were used from five databases. In total, 63 studies were used in the review of the literature.

The study included adult inpatients in community and acute hospital settings.
