Healthcare compliance is a crucial concept in the U.S healthcare system. The existent and emerging healthcare regulations demand hospitals and healthcare providers. While some may view compliance as governmental disruptions and oversight, some will view compliance as an approach to improving quality and controlling costs.
Specialized Training for Billing and Coding Personnel
Like any other hospital, medical billing and coding are the backbones of healthcare, ensuring that patients and payers reimburse providers for their service delivery. In addition, medical billing and coding translate a patient encounter into the languages used for claims submission and reimbursement. Billing and coding are separate processes, but both are crucial to receiving payment for healthcare services. Therefore, the organization should ensure that there is compliance among its employees to operate within the laws. With significant experiences in billing and coding as a supervisor, I believe that there is a need for specialized training, and I have select the following training topics to better employee’s compliances:
Cybersecurity: though it more of information technology technician. Any practitioners need to understand the management of data to avoid exposure to hackers. Research shows that practitioners are significant contributors to cyberattacks. Ensuring cybersecurity will ensure increased compliance to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) which anchors the Privacy Rule, the Security Rule, the Breach Notification Rule (Wu, Ahn & Hu,2012). Patients’ data ought to be protected at all times to avoid violating HIPAA regulations.
Office for Civil Rights (OCR) Enforcement Actions: It is essential to remind practitioners of rules that apply for corrective measures in case of investigations that indicate non-compliance. It is essential for billing and medical coding staff to comply with rules of practice and behaviors that do not discriminate against others based on race, disability, or sex. In some cases, the OCR has settled a civil penalty that has cost millions of dollars. Compliance with Office for Civil Rights requirements protect the social equity and reputation of the organization
Regulatory landscape: with the current rise in abuse and fraud in the health sector, health workers should know Anti-Kickback Statute, stark laws, and other states' laws. For instance, the Anti-Kickback Statute makes it illegal for anyone or party to willfully offer, pay, solicit, or receive remuneration to induce or reward, to induce the referral of business reimbursable under any federal health care programs (Imperato,2017). The billing and medical coding staff should be educated about these laws to promote compliance and avoid situations that the organization can violate these laws.
Compliance Due Diligence: The training will focus on how the company elevates compliance risk profile by uncovering red flags, particularly in contractual arrangements, fraud bribery data protection, and other conflicting issues. This will help workers understand the business and its risk management process for timely and efficient reporting.
Healthcare due diligence: it will highlight significant aspects in making a decision that enables employees to either make go or lose about closing a deal. Since they are involved in the organization's day-to-day activities, the training will help make an informed decision regarding particular billing transactions.
Government Overpayments: This part of the training will help practitioners understand the overpayment concepts and how the investigations are done. This will help health workers to decide the claims that patients made overpayments.
Value-Based Compensation Arrangements: since they are billers, they should understand the concept of value-based in determining the amount to bill physicians. They should rely on the benchmark data. It helps to make the current reimbursement.
